HempWorld, Inc. is founded by Matthew T. Huijgen (39 yrs.) a multi-cultural and multi-lingual (7+) individual, born, educated and raised in the Netherlands until the age of 21. He completed his Masters in Business Administration at the university of Amsterdam while living in France, Spain and the US. Matthew was instrumental in the startup of three businesses in California, he is a member of MENSA international and he was also active in selecting the Pentiumä name for Intel corporation.

Being so close to the microprocessor industry since I studied it, starting in 1982. It is only in these last few years that I have acquired the strong conviction and belief that technology will neither make us happier nor will it play a major role when combating global warming. (and actually technology is making us a lot fatter and unhealthier too) Technology is isolating and removing us from our own nature.

Instead, we should get closer to nature, which is also our nature. Only then will we find home; serene peace and magic moments, contrary to today's hustle and bustle. What is most crucial is a changed attitude towards the environment and a willingness to be happy with less, or to have less, but be it sustainable, or be it more expensive, but sustainable.

When we use non-sustainable cheap products for our bodies and environments, we eventually pay the price in disease or some other from of degradation. We humans have merely shifted huge amounts of resources and transformed a large part of those into toxins, heat and greenhouse gases. Climate conferences talk about heat sinks and counting trees because of their absorption of CO2. But ... hemp is 4 times the heat sink of trees because it produces 4 times the amount of biomass during the same time. Isn't hemp a great heat sink? But no. Unfortunately, hemp is not mentioned because it is 'forgotten' it is eliminated from our common knowledge and therefore we cannot think of this as an alternative.

Hopefully, we have not forgotten that we are responsible for the well being of our planet. We humans, have definitely been responsible for its demise. At this point (Dec 11, 2000), I wonder how big the headlines in the newspapers and how many people must perish before the world as a whole, takes this seriously. We will see ... Make it hempenä

Growing up in a multi-tolerant, multi-cultural society and quite an exemplary democracy as exists in the Netherlands, has given Matthijs a good background. Also, living in at least five countries, traveling to many others, learning about cultures and languages has been very enriching and educative.

“I feel that I am a 'world citizen' and that the world is one. This makes me feel responsible for the whole world. The world is now part of my, or our, backyard. Whether via internet or the globalization of all companies and people in the world or our pollution, we are one, we are connected, like it or not. Increased standardization such as: American as a world-language, computers, trade, ethics, music and last but not least our pollution... we are one, we are interdependent as one planet.”

So here we all are on one little planet. What can we do for the future and ourselves? HempWorld, Inc. thinks that we have to curb production of all man made chemicals AND allow for sustainable production and prices only. Quote from founder Matthew: “I feel decreasingly confident that mankind is able to avert a major life threatening crises, let alone acknowledge and agree on a plan of action (see current greenhouse gases debate). I have to conclude that from the, especially westernized societies such as US and Europe, we are living based on the principle: Each for her/his/their own and God for us all.”

I believe Hemp will and can play a crucial role in the recovery of planet Earth. HempWorld, Inc. will be one of our instruments to accomplish detoxification and sustainability of our backyard!
