Hemp has been grown with renewed vigor for over 5
years now, in countries such as Canada and the entire European Union (EU=15
countries among which, England or UK), where hemp is subsidized to the tune of
approx. US$280 per acre! It is used, for example, by Mercedes-Benz in all their
models in sound insulation and fiber for door panels. Famed Georgio Armani has
embraced hemp for clothing. It is absolutely baffling to see the United States
going in the opposite direction with no concept of renewable energy or
agriculture, forestry, less fuel efficient cars, you name it. And the DEA and
American Police claim not to be able to tell the difference between hemp and
marijuana, fortunately the police are smarter in countries where hemp is
grown. How can this ostrich 'policy' be explained? Yes, indeed this is quite a
scary but plausible explanation (and I am a rational college graduate,
productive human being and yes I am also a member of
MENSA Int'l), judge for yourself. More important now than ever with
the USA stoking the wars for oil and the importance it puts on this polluting
non-renewable resource, will we let it seal our fate?:
We are, indeed, at war here in America. But we are
just now starting to understand who and what we are fighting. The Corporations
made a power-play during World War II that effectively consolidated their Power
to choose which natural resource would dominate our future. Only two resources
are versatile and potentially available enough to qualify for this honor:
Petroleum and Cannabis Hemp. Petroleum is a controllable resource, its
production expensive, its products patented, control of the "free" market more
certain. Cannabis Hemp is a people's natural resource, as valuable and versatile
as petroleum, but under the control of no corporation, bank, or industry. It
offers a broad-based, regional economy that would share the wealth of the Earth
with the people within the region of Cannabis Hemp production, manufacturing,
and transportation. Only Cannabis Hemp offers a truly "free" market. Only
Cannabis Hemp offers a de-concentration of the wealth.
Only Cannabis Hemp offers a democratic system of government with an acceptable
level of corruption.

of the Japanese, and shipment of jute from India curtailed, American hemp must
meet the needs of our Army and Navy, as well as of our industry. In 1942,
patriotic farmers, at the government’s request, planted 36,000 acres of seed
hemp, an increase of several thousand percent. The goal for 1943 is 50,000 acres
of seed hemp."
Well Mr. "President," (in quotation marks because with Catherine Harris and
others help, you stole the presidency) HempFarm.com is asking you: Is Hemp patriotic or is it
"drugs"? (do you even know what hemp is?) Have you forgotten your
heritage? How the Bush family emigrated from Leiden, Holland and sailed to North
America on a ship with hempen sails and rigging? And your father who jumped from
a plane during WWII using a Hemp webbing parachute, and your interests are now
in the oil industry just like your entire government, go figure! Now, in
addition you are waging an illegal war for oil, no wonder the US was kicked out
of the UN Human Rights committee and that you did not want the International
Court of Justice to be able to call you in for war crimes. Where is the hemp?
And how come the opium production in Afghanistan doubled last year during US
occupancy? We are witnessing
Armageddon.

Large-scale impoverishment of Amazonian forests by logging and fire, from "Nature" Journal April 8th

Amazonian deforestation rates are used to determine human effects on the global carbon cycle and to measure Brazil's progress in curbing forest impoverishment. But this widely used measure of tropical land use tells only part of the story. Here we present field surveys of wood mills and forest burning across Brazilian Amazonia which show that logging crews severely damage 10,000 to 15,000 km2 yr-1 of forest that are not included in deforestation mapping programmes.
Moreover, we find that surface fires burn additional large areas of standing forest, the destruction of which is normally not documented. Forest impoverishment due to such fires may increase dramatically when severe droughts provoke forest leaf-shedding and greater flammability; our regional water-balance model indicates that an estimated 270,000 km2 of forest became vulnerable to fire in the 1998 dry season. Overall, we find that present estimates of annual deforestation for Brazilian Amazonia capture less than half of the forest area that is impoverished each year, and even less during years of severe drought. Both logging and fire increase forest vulnerability to future burning and release forest carbon stocks to the atmosphere, potentially doubling net carbon emissions from regional land-use during severe El Niño episodes.
If this forest impoverishment is to be controlled, then logging activities need to be restricted or replaced with low-impact timber harvest techniques, and more effective strategies to prevent accidental forest fires need to be implemented.

The Brazilian government has finally admitted that the destruction of the Amazon rainforest has dramatically accelerated. In 1995 de-forestation is at more than double the 1994 rate. As could be shown from satellite pictures finally released yesterday (Jan. 27, 1998).
The government had kept the condemning pictures a secret. In the past 20 years the Amazon has been reduced by nearly a quarter of a million kilometers. If this rate is kept up, the last tree will fall in the year 2023!

Scientists have documented for the first time that industrial pollution and dust from Asia travel across the Pacific and degrade U.S. air quality.
The main concern is fine particles of industrial and soot from Asian factories, where pollution controls are weak. These particles lodge deeply in the lungs and are believed linked to respiratory disease.
