Field 1 - Unico-B yielded 7 t/ha of retted stems as average actual field harvest and 8.2 t/ha on basis of hand harvest. The fiber yield was 33% of 8.2 t/ha = 2.7 t/ha and hurds yield was 5.2 t/ha (63% of 8.2 t/ha). See Graphs 11.1-1, 11.1-2 and 11.1-3
Field 2 - Unico-B in yielded 9.3-t/ha hand harvest compared to 6.8-t/ha actual field harvest. The fiber yield was 38% (3.5 t/ha) and hurds 59% of hand harvest - 9.3 t/ha. See Graphs 11.2-1, 11.2-2 and 11.2-3
The stem heights in both fields were 2.0 M and average stem diameters were 6.8 mm in field 1 and 7.5 mm in field 2 suggesting the extra fiber yield in field 2 came from the thicker stems.
Kompolti in field 2 had thicker stems (8.3 mm) and was taller (2.2 M) than Unico B. This was probably due to a thinner stand - 64/M2 compared to Unico B (112/M2) at harvest. The average hand harvest was 9.7 t/ha yielding 3.7 t/ha fiber (39%) and 5.6 t/ha hurd (58%) - higher yielding than Unico B. This is based on 3rd cut when Unico-B and Kompolti were 75% done shedding pollen. See Graphs 11.3-1, 11.3-2 and 11.3-3
The late planting of Unico-B field 2 (June 25) resulted in a 3rd cut yield of about 5,000 kg/ha compared to 9,300 kg/ha for May 24 seeding - 54% yield of earlier seeding. Graph 11.4-1.
The performance of Kompolti after corn in field 3 on Brookston clay soil was 7.4 t/ha compared to 9.7 in field 2 on Clyde loam soil - about 76%. Kompolti after wheat yielded (4.6 t/ha) 62% of Kompolti after corn (7.4 t/ha) in field 3 based on hand harvest. The plant heights and diameter of stems, comparing wheat and corn as previous crops, also differed significantly - after corn taller and thicker stems.
